What is Accra Pictures by Day and Night?

Accra is the capital of the small, West African country of Ghana, which achieved its independence in 1957 from its colonial master, the United Kingdom. It celebrated 50 years in 2007, and is projecting itself fast and furiously as "gateway to West Africa".

It's an exciting city, with its unique problems, but with it close to the Atlantic ocean, and many beaches, who can resist coming here?

Waiting to Board a (Public Transport) Bus

This is a familiar scene all over Accra--especially rush-hour, when many Ghanaians are hoping to get home as quickly as possible.

This is one of the many different types of transport we have available for Ghanaians to commute, albeit more popular--not just for the very low cost of around 10 Ghana pesewas, or circa $0.13, but because it's also positively more comfortable than the usual tro-tros!

The tyres are another rather typical scene; they help remind motorists that there are vulcanizers in the 'hood who can fix tyres for you!;-)

So tell me, are the tro-tros actually cheaper than US$0.13? Wow!

BTW, I heard about the flooding in Northern Region... were you or your family affected at all? I was so sorry to hear of the calamity there.

Hi PV--many thanks for your concern! Since we're in Accra, we were ok. Even then, most of my extended family (mother and father's side) are in the Central region and Volta region respectively. I don't have any in the Northern...

The tro-tros are going around that price--depending on the distance. A tro-tro to, say, the Central region, although very risky, will cost you around 10-30K maximum old Ghana cedis, or 1-3 GHana cedis!

State transport can cost you (with lugguage) 5-probably 8 Ghana cedis now (air-condition, etc).

These big buses--Mass Metro transport--can go for as little as 20 Ghana pesewas to travel to the heart of the capital from Tetteh-Quarshie...

How r things??
