What is Accra Pictures by Day and Night?

Accra is the capital of the small, West African country of Ghana, which achieved its independence in 1957 from its colonial master, the United Kingdom. It celebrated 50 years in 2007, and is projecting itself fast and furiously as "gateway to West Africa".

It's an exciting city, with its unique problems, but with it close to the Atlantic ocean, and many beaches, who can resist coming here?

The Ghanaian Lizard Has Star Quality!

"Who's the Hottest Lizard in Town? I am!"

In the ever-platitudinous fast-paced society in which Christmas appears but a welcome blot at the end of the year, we sometimes forget to get sufficiently close to nature in the way we would want. So it was a welcome sight for me last week when outside drying clothes, I noticed this lizard up on a wall enjoying what looked like a sun-bathe!

Quickly and discreetly, I rushed inside to get my camera. Here is the result!

This Ghanaian lizard--profoundly innocuous and more likely to run away from a human than approach him/her -- has, I would like to think, quintessence of stardom:-D

Beautiful lizard! How big is it?

Hi JM--not very big; imagine the spectacles worn by Wall-street types. You know those slim, black-rimmed ones, and think of a small tail. Better still, think of your average small stapler, and you might get the picture:-))

Thanks for your comment!

This one looks a proud beast.

Do people ever keep them as pets?

Kris--no! That's the last thing any Ghanaian would do! There are too many of them around anyway!

Andrea--thank you for your kind comments!

To all of you: MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

I remember these Agama lizards well and the way they do push-ups! I enjoy visiting Accra through your blog very much. I used to live in Lome many years ago and often visited Accra and Tamale up north. I envy you your weather now - here it is all snow. Best Christmas Wishes and a Happy New Year!

Kris - this kind of lizard is all over West Africa and is very common - almost like flies - if you have a compound you will have them - no need to cosset them as pets.
