What is Accra Pictures by Day and Night?

Accra is the capital of the small, West African country of Ghana, which achieved its independence in 1957 from its colonial master, the United Kingdom. It celebrated 50 years in 2007, and is projecting itself fast and furiously as "gateway to West Africa".

It's an exciting city, with its unique problems, but with it close to the Atlantic ocean, and many beaches, who can resist coming here?

Terrible Traffic on Spintex Road 17 Aug, 2009

Both northbound and southbound directions revealed tremendous traffic yesterday evening due to an accident on the Tetteh-Quarshie interchange. Those among us who are foolishly intrepid decided to walk instead of staying in a vehicle that was charging you for essentially being in traffic! This picture attests to that "foolishness". My camera-phone was a worthy target for theft but, hey, anything for a photo-op!

You can view a video clip of how bad it was here.

Hey EK,
Wasn't the traffic just CRAZY?!
I had a meeting at the Holiday Inn at 6pm and got stuck in traffic hell all the way from Tetteh Quarshie to Spanner junction. In the end I had to detour through Airport past Nyaho Clinic to come out at Opeibea House. There was still loads of traffic on that route! The frustrating part was that when I finally got to the Holiday Inn at 8pm, the person I was supposed to meet...came in from Tema, got stuck in traffic for a couple of hours and bailed out on me! Arghhh! Luckily, a friend is staying at the Holiday Inn so I just got to hang with him for the rest of the evening.

Abena, tell me about it! So a small accident (ok, I will weigh my words a bit more carefully!) can cause this degree of traffic? Ouch! Opeibea House is a mean place to get stuck! But your friend, could he not have called you to say he was going?

Sorry about that upset. I hope the govt works out something with the Bus Rapid Transit service which will enable those with cars to leave their cars not just tos ave fuel, but to enhance the air quality in the city!

Great photo. I bet it took quite a while to get out of this mess.
