As far as I know, this GOIL shop does not have a website, but I can tell you that given the human traffic that flows in and out of this place every hour, if it did have a site, it might be hitting the thousands every week!

Cautionary Tales of ...Ghanaian Taxis!

There I was last evening sitting in a shared taxi (that's a taxi that takes you to a destination with the price split among the number of occupants) of four people almost at GOIL filling station on the Spintex Road, when the taxi blurts to a rude stop.

The reason was a simple one: petrol--or lack thereof! We had to wait some ten minutes before the taxi driver ran up to GOIL, get some fuel, and get back to the car to fill it up.

As you can imagine, I took the opportunity to take a picture to memorialise some of the hazards our taxi-drivers put us through!

My Favourite Taxi Rank (Accra Mall)

I like to walk, and from work, I often do so for around 15 minutes. Thanks to a colleague who showed me a new shortcut, I can get directly to Accra Mall now. This taxi rank is two minutes walk across the road from the mall.

I like it for the taxi-drivers--which cars are both salubrious and otherwise--shouting "motorway![reference to Tema motorway]"; "junction-junction-junction!"; "communities 18, 19"; "Fridays! Fridays!". All these routes ultimately lead to Tema. Almost every destination accrues a rate of GHC1.00, or roughly $US1.00.

I always take the "junction-junction-junction!" one (or simply junction!) as it takes me to after Papaye on the Spintex Road and to GOIL fillimg station, where I stop to walk on home.

Ghana Oil Company Limited (GOIL) was established on 14th June 1960 under the Companies Ordinance (CAP 193) as AGIP Ghana Limited with AGIP S.P.A of Italy having 855,000 shares and SNAM SPA also of Italy with 95,000 shares. On the 16th December 1968 the 95,000-shares were transferred to Hydrocarbons International Holdings of Zurich. The Company is now fully owned by the government of Ghana which acquired it in 1974. Ministry of Energy represents the government in all its dealings with the Company

I have always wondered why filling stations have websites, but I guess in these days of one, they wonder "why not"? Either way, I have to admit that it's rather fortuitous that I should find this on my desktop somewhere, because three years back home, working professionally, and here I was totally oblivious to this website!!
